“Run Away” is a step into bold new territory for both artists, seamlessly blending the hallmarks of Tycho’s music – detailed arrangements, crisp production and skittering electronics – with rum.gold’s soulful vocals and emotionally resonant lyrics. Tycho’s first-ever collaboration with a male vocalist, the track showcases the two musicians’ obvious chemistry, despite having never worked together in person thus far (the former is based in San Francisco, the latter in Brooklyn).
‘Run Away’ marks the first new original music from Tycho since the February release of SIMULCAST, an instrumental companion record to last year’s GRAMMY® Award-nominated WEATHER, as well the first new music from rum.gold since the Juneteenth release of his track ‘Fix Me,’ inspired by the current movement for social change in the United States and hailed as “mesmerizing” by The Line of Best Fit.
“With “Run Away,’ I wanted to take new musical ideas and wrap them in the familiar sonics and textures of my sound,” says Tycho mastermind Scott Hansen. “Working with rum.gold’s voice was really freeing in that it provided the contrast needed to push things into a different emotional space.”
“‘Run Away’ was fun to write,” says rum.gold, “not only because this isn’t my usual style of writing but also because I got to play a different character other than myself. It’s a very selfish track while also being apologetic and reflective at the same time.”
ABOUT TYCHO:
As Tycho, Scott Hansen blends swirling melodies into vaguely triumphant arcs that crisscross between stuttering beats and vocal samples, creating rolling sonic landscapes that extend into the horizon. The San Francisco based Hansen began releasing music in the early 2000’s with The Science of Patterns EP. His first full-length, Sunrise Projector, came out in 2004, and the critical acclaim continued in 2006 with the release of Past Is Prologue. In 2011, his meticulous process saw the release of Dive, the first record in a trilogy that was followed by Awake in 2014 and the GRAMMY-Nominated Epoch in 2016. Hansen expanded the scope of his project with the addition of vocalist Saint Sinner on 2019’s Weather, his second GRAMMY nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. That release was quickly followed by its instrumental companion record Simulcast in early 2020. Over the course of the last fifteen years, Hansen has developed from a delicate solo performer into the iconic frontman of a powerful five-piece live band that brings his compositions to life. Tycho has evolved from a singular to a plural, and from an electronic, ambient experiment to a live audio-visual experience that fans travel the world over to see.
ABOUT rum.gold:
Singer-songwriter from the DMV living in Brooklyn, NY. Up until now he’s kept most of what he’s working on a secret. rum.gold’s music is best described as the selfish revolution of a wallflower. His voice is rich, delicate and carries an unfathomable beauty. There is a depth of melody and soul within his songs that is transcendent. His performances are intimate and honest. Left of center R&B, informed by the past but pushing the confines of different genres. No boundaries. Unapologetic.
