Becky G – Why I Vote
The “Why I Vote” campaign gives artists a chance to share personal opinions on the key issues shaping the 2016 Presidential Election. Along the way, they encourage young people, a traditionally under-represented demographic at the polls, to participate in the political process that impacts us all. From Kesha to T.I. to American Authors, each episode focuses on a particular subject, including immigration, LGBTQ rights, mass incarceration, and education opportunities. We’re hoping to galvanize first-time voters interested in shaping their own future.
For musician/actress Becky G, whose full name is Rebecca Marie Gomez, this year’s election is key. It’s her first opportunity to vote, and given her Mexican heritage, immigration is a particularly significant subject to her. More than 40 years ago, Becky’s grandparents risked their lives to come to the U.S. in hopes of a better life, more opportunities, and equal rights.
As a second-generation American, Becky credits much of her work ethic and success to her grandparents, and their will to thrive as U.S. citizens. In the emotional clip, Becky says, “The immigration system can be bettered, or made a bit more efficient, or more effective for more people. All these things factor into why I’m voting.”
